A native of Asheville, NC, Dwayne Barton grew up in Washington, DC. He is a Gulf War veteran and attended Norfolk State University in Virginia. For over 15 years Barton’s creative practice and his community activism have been inextricably linked. Returning to Asheville in 2001, Barton concentrated his efforts on social and environmental justice. After his attendance at the 2008 “Good Jobs, Green Jobs” conference in Pittsburgh, PA, Barton co-founded and is the co-director of Green Opportunities, a “green-collar” job training program for young adults. Better known as B-Love, he is a moving spoken word performer and the maker of provocative found object sculptures. With his wife Safi Mahaba, Barton has created The Burton Street Community Peace Garden an organic community garden network and Creative Ambitions an outdoor art gallery.
